Summer, as we know it, is over. Practices for Montana high school fall sports started this week.

While practice started as early as Thursday for Class AA and A golfers, the rest of the fall sports kicked off their 2018 seasons on Friday. Cross country, football, soccer and volleyball athletes were able to start practicing at the stroke of midnight.

Golf competitions can start as early as Saturday with the state meets set for the end of September. The State AA tournament will be Sept. 27-28 at the Butte Country Club, and the State A tournament will be Sept. 28-29 at the Hamilton Golf Course.

The rest of the sports can begin competitions on Aug. 23.

The all-class state cross country meet is Oct. 20 at Missoula.

The Class AA boys and girls state soccer tournaments are Oct. 25-27 at Helena. Class A utilizes a single-elimination bracket with games played at host sites. The first round is scheduled to begin the week of Oct. 8 with the championship matches the weekend of Oct. 25-27.

The four state volleyball tournaments run concurrently Nov. 8-10 at Montana State University’s Brick Breeden Fieldhouse in Bozeman.

The Montana high school football playoffs begin Oct. 27, with all classes except Class AA beginning their postseason. Class AA starts the next weekend and will hold its state championship on Nov. 16. The rest of the state football title games will be Nov. 17.

All of the high school football state championships will be played at host sites, except for the 8-Man championship. For the first time, it will be played at a neutral site. Butte’s Naranche Stadium will play host to the 8-Man title game this November.
