GLENDIVE – Dawson Community College head softball coach Jim LeProwse is thrilled to announce that Helena Capital standout Shelby Martin has signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball at Dawson next season.

A three-time all-state selection, Martin led the Bruins pitching staff with an 11-5 mark and a 1.70 earned run average. She struck out 129 batters in 98 innings pitched while allowing 84 hits and only 24 walks. She also threw five shutouts this season while breaking Capital’s record for career strike outs with 429 and career wins with 37. She also ranks No. 2 with 342 innings pitched, 47 starts and 15 strikeouts in a game.

Martin is also a great player on offense. This season she batted .391, posted 17 RBIs and a .500 on base percentage, and led her team with six stolen bases. Last year, she was at the top of her team with 30 RBIs.

“Shelby is a tremendous addition to our softball program at Dawson,” said LeProwse. “I went to the state AA tournament this year and she stood out to me above all of the other pitchers in the state. She has great velocity, great control of all of her pitches and has a perfect demeanor for a college level pitcher. She is very athletic and is also a great offensive player. Shelby will make an immediate impact at Dawson this season and I couldn’t be happier that she chose to play at Dawson next season.”

Martin is the daughter of Craig and Leah Martin. She graduated with a 3.67 GPA and plans to study criminal justice.
