HELENA – Some athletes just have it.

Helena Capital’s Justin Jenks isn’t just a college-bound athlete, having signed on for football and track at Colorado State University Pueblo this fall. The Bruin is the best shot put thrower in Montana, sitting all alone atop the state standings in all classes with a throw of just more than 63 feet.

“I don’t know. I guess I just like throwing heavy things,” laughed Jenks.

But athletic specimens like Jenks need to constantly test themselves with the next challenge. So the brightest minds at our MTN Sports Laboratories put together a gauntlet we like to call the ‘Gallagher Test.’ Did Jenks pass the test? Watch the video above.

We’ve selected several items of varying size and weight to measure the pure hurling capability and technique of the Treasure State’s top thrower.

“He’s been dedicated to throwing since he was a freshman,” said Capital track coach John Joyce. “He came out, had never thrown before and fell in love with it and went to some camps. The better he got, the more he liked it. I think that’s what his biggest key is, that he loves throwing.”

The Class AA state track and field meet starts Friday in Great Falls at Memorial Stadium.
