HELENA – Helena High School announced Friday morning that following school board approval, long time Bengals assistant Sam Bogard will be named as the school’s new wrestling head coach, replacing John Burke who left the program back in March.

Sam has been an assistant with the Bengals wrestling program for 10 years and a coach with the East Helena Wrestling Club for 20. His affiliation with the school, though, goes back even further, having wrestled for Helena High before graduating in 1988.

“I’m really excited, it’s something I’ve always thought about,” Bogard said about his promotion to head coach. “But didn’t think John would be leaving anytime soon.”

After being with the program in one form or another for so long Sam has an excellent understanding of where to take the program moving forward. Which, as you can imagine, does not mean changing things up too much.

“Still attack style wrestling, no way we’re going to get away from that,” the new head coach said.

We’ll have more from Bogard and his plans for the future of Bengals wrestling next week.
