BILLINGS – Over the last week, we’ve met state champions, multi-sport stars, and top-level recruits among the Midland Roundtable Athlete of the Year finalists. Gabe Sulser falls into all three categories.

We first met Sulser in 2011 as one of the Big Sky Little League All-Stars who captured the attention of the entire state after a magical World Series run. But baseball was just the beginning.

Sulser went on to have one of the most decorated football careers in Montana high school history, winning his final 26 games with Billings Senior as a back-to-back state champion, and was named the 2017 Montana Gatorade Player of the Year.

He also won a state hurdles title, following in the footsteps of older sister Morgan, who was named the 2014 Roundtable Athlete of the Year. Add in older brother Ben’s nomination in 2012, and Gabe knows all about this award, which should make Wednesday’s banquet easier.

“I think I was more nervous for them than I will be for myself,” said the youngest Sulser. “It was a lot of really good athletes for both their years, and so I was more nervous for them. I’m just thankful to be a nominee, and it’s something cool to be a part of, so hopefully I can just enjoy it.”

Sulser will bring that humility to Missoula in the fall, where he’ll attend the University of Montana on a full football scholarship.
