Western B girls: Florence, Bigfork storm into semifinals

RONAN – Three teams from District 6B and the favorites from Distirct 7B all won first-round games at the Western B girls basketball divisional tournament on Thursday.

The 6B champs from Florence started the bracket with a 61-34 win over Thompson Falls. Star junior guard Danielle Zahn paced the Falcons with 21 points. Makenna Liles added 14, and Rilee Mangun chipped in 12.

Deer Lodge then shut down Eureka. The No. 3 seed from the 6B topped the 7B runners-up, 37-19. The Wardens’ Riley Gray was the only player to reach double figures with 11 points.

Later in the evening, 7B champ Bigfork used a strong early start to take care of Anaconda, 52-38. The Vals led 9-0 after the first quarter and held off the Copperheads after that. Jaime Berg scored a game-high 19 points for Bigfork. Ellie Berreth added 14 points.

Missoula Loyola finished the night late with a 49-29 win over Troy. The 6B runners-up trailed 8-6 after the first quarter, but then Loyola scored 19 points in the second quarter and led by double digits the entire second half. Tessa Burke paced the Breakers with 20 points.

Florence and Deer Lodge will meet in the first semifinal at 7:20 p.m. Friday. Bigfork and Loyola will follow with a scheduled start at 9 p.m.

Thompson Falls will play Eureka in a loser-out at 11:20 a.m. Friday. Anaconda and Troy will collide in another loser-out contest at 1 p.m.
