High school wrestling competition is finally under way across Montana.
Defending Class B champion Glasgow made the trek south on Saturday to battle a pair of strong Class B programs in 2020 runner-up Huntley Project and Columbus-Absarokee-Park City.
Glasgow, led by returning state champions Colten Fast, Dylan Nieskens, and Cooper Larson, defeated Columbus-Absarokee-Park City 48-29 and Huntley Project 33-29.
Wrestlers were just happy to hit the mats against someone other than their teammates, as they've practiced for nearly a month before opening competition on Saturday afternoon.
"I'm just glad we're wrestling. I wasn't sure if we were going to have a wrestling season," Glasgow senior heavyweight Mayson Phipps said following a pin in his season-opening match. "It feels nice being able to take it out on other people instead of each other in the room. It gets heated in the room sometimes.”
"We were just trying to get the intensity up in there. We’ve got a lot of new kids, got some girls on the team, so trying to get the intensity up and get all back into it," said Columbus senior Cooper Cook, a two-time state medalist. "We’ve just got to stay safe, put the masks on. It’s not a big deal and we get through it. Whatever we can do to wrestle, though.”
