Cascade makes history with all-girls wrestling mixer

CASCADE — The Cascade Badgers hosted an all-girls high school wrestling mixer on Tuesday afternoon, the first-ever event of its kind in central Montana.

With teams limited to duals and mixers with a numbers cap this season, matches are hard to come by for athletes competing in girls wrestling in its first year as a Montana High School Association-sanctioned winter sport.

That’s what Tuesday’s event was hoping to change. In all, 34 wrestlers representing 10 schools competed at the mixer, led by 17 who made the trip from Kalispell Flathead.

Each wrestler competed in two matches in two separate rounds. A total of six wrestlers finished the day with 2-0 records: Flathead’s Lily Conover and Skye Shelmerdine, Hamilton’s Hannah Hurst, Great Falls High’s Kaylin Taylor, Choteau’s Anna Stutz and Chinook freshman Ryley Hofeldt.

Cascade will host another all-girls wrestling mixer on Feb. 9 at 2 p.m.
