GREAT FALLS– The University of Providence hosted the Argo Athletic Scholarship Golf Scramble at the Eagle Falls Golf Club Friday. The event started successfully with 38 teams competing for cash prizes before dealing with some rain.

The Argos have held similar events in the past, but this year all funds generated go to athletic scholarships instead of operating costs for the athletic department.

“It’s a nice situation to be in three years into it. In my tenure, with Providence’s help, that we’ve gotten the operations budgets pretty well-funded via the university,” UP Vice President for Athletics Dave Gantt said.

For Gantt, it’s also a sign recruiting will improve.

“It means a lot in terms of how we’re able to scholarship. Previously there were discounts given. Now it’s cash,” Gantt said. “So we were able to back-fill and generate the cash necessary to be more productive out there in the whole world of recruiting. The competitive nature of recruiting is never-ending, so we need to make sure we’re doing it the right way.”
