LA GRANDE, Ore. – University of Providence’s 149-pounder No. 5 Shonn Roberts was named the CCC Wrestler of the Week, announced by the conference office on Monday.
Roberts had a stellar week as he helped secure two dual victories for the Argos, in addition to being a huge factor in the Argos near upset of the fourth-ranked NCAA Division II McKendree Bearcats. He also had a huge day in the Battle of the Rockies Open as he placed second to No. 4-ranked Isaiah Kemper of McKendree.
Against No. 6 Northwest Tech (Kan.), Roberts earned a first-period pin of the Mavericks’ Bat-Erdene Boldmaa, who on Saturday won the 141-pound championship. The then followed that up with a 6-2 decision over the D-II Isaiah Kemper.
On Saturday, Roberts defeated his first two tournament opponents by lopsided technical falls of No. 20 Dickinson State’s Lief Erickson 16-1 and Simpson University’s Silas LaGroue by 17-0. In the tournament semifinals, he produced another shutout as he topped No. 9 Embry-Riddle’s seventh-ranked David Salazar in a 4-0 decision to advance to the championship match.
Roberts is 15-2 on the season, which includes an undefeated record in duals, 5-0 overall and 2-0 in CCC duals.
The Argos will compete in one more tournament before the holiday break as they will travel to Phoenix, Arizona to compete in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Duals on December 16.
