GREAT FALLS – University of Providence Argo Athletics and Vice President for Athletics Dave Gantt announce the appointment of Carlene Sluberski as the new head coach of Argo Women’s Wrestling, to begin January 2019.

“We have been on a national quest to find a high quality, well-seasoned, female coach whose experience encompasses collegiate and international competition,” remarked Gantt. “Sluberski has been a collegiate student-athlete, a national and international level competitor and coach, and is very well prepared to lead our women’s wrestling program.”

Sluberski, a Fredonia, New York native, attended the Northern Michigan University Olympic Education Center from 2009-12 before transferring to Brock University, in which she completed her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology in 2016.

On the mat, Sluberski was a four-time Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Champion, renamed and now known as U Sports. She was also a two-time U.S. Senior National Team Member and served as a training partner for the 2013 and 2014 World Championships, as well as the 2016 Olympic Games.

“We have accomplished our goal and more, with a commitment from Coach Sluberski to help us move forward with the growth of our women’s program,” explained Dave Gantt. “During our interactions on campus, she represented herself, her vision, and her coaching style very well.”

Not only has Sluberski wrestled at an elite level, she also extensive coaching experience at a variety of levels, from youth teams in New York to coaching national teams overseas.

“Her knowledge and background make her a perfect fit to take our women’s program to the next level,” expressed Caleb Schaeffer, Director of Wrestling.

Prior to her appointment as the new head Women’s Wrestling Coach, Sluberski has been working towards obtaining her Master of Arts in Teaching, in addition to serving as a graduate assistant at the University of the Cumberlands (UC). She has served in this capacity since May 2017 with a planned graduation in December 2018. During her time at UC, Sluberski has coached five All-Americans in the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA), in addition to two All-Americans in the U23 World Team Trials.

“She captured the attention of our women wrestlers in a very engaging and positive way,” said Dave Gantt. “As a result, I am convinced that she is absolutely the best ‘leadership fit’ for our program at this point in time. Additionally, she will collaborate well with Coach Schaeffer.”

Sluberski also spent this past summer serving as a volunteer coach in Fargo for Team NY, in addition to coaching at the Junior Pan-Ams in Fortaleza, Brazil in which the Team USA women placed first overall.

“I am very excited to work alongside Coach Sluberski to achieve collective success at a high level and create two high-caliber programs that are national championship contenders,” said Schaeffer. “We are very excited to welcome her to the University of Providence and witness the successes of Argo Women’s Wrestling,” added Gantt.
