Eryn Ellis, Rocky Mountain College women lead Frontier Championships after Day 1

PHOENIX — Rocky Mountain College senior Eryn Ellis fired an opening-round 77, and the Battlin’ Bears as a team shot 324 to take a 17-shot lead after Day 1 of the Frontier Conference women’s golf championships Monday at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix.

Ellis leads Lewis-Clark State’s Marissa Louder by one shot in the individual race. The senior from Casper, Wyoming opened with an even-par 36 on the back nine after starting the day on Hole No. 10 but struggled on the front with three bogeys and a double-bogey.

Rocky’s five players all finished in the top six. Amanda Conner sits third after an 81, while teammates Anna DeMars and Morgan O’Neil are tied for fourth after opening-round 83s.

Hayden Flohr, the defending Frontier Conference champion, is sixth after an 84.

Three Lewis-Clark golfers finished right behind Flohr to put the Warriors in second at 341 strokes. Montana Tech is a distant third at 373.

Round 2 of 3 begins Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. PDT. The winning team and individual player earn automatic bids to the NAIA women’s golf championship at Lincoln Park Golf Club in Oklahoma City, May 14-17.
