Rocky Mountain College stuns No. 6 Hastings in snowy playoff opener

HASTINGS, Neb. – In snowy, blustery conditions, Rocky’s men’s soccer team defeated the Hastings College Broncos 3-2 in the opening round of the 2018 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship.

Entering today’s match, Hastings College (17-3, 11-0 GPAC) had not lost a single match at home on the entire season and were on a 14 game win streak that included the GPAC title. Rocky (18-4, 10-3 CCC) entered the game fresh off winning their conference title against Southern Oregon in penalty kicks.

Rocky immediately took the lead. Only 43 seconds into the game, Pablo Ferreira found the back of the net off a penalty kick.

In the 40th minute, Marco Kummerle put the Battlin’ Bears up by two with an assist from Sky Swenson.

Two minutes into the second half of play, Hasting’s Daniel Whitehall scored a goal for the Broncos. Rocky’s Sky Swenson responded with a goal of his own in the 53rd minute.

Whitehall would score again for Hastings in the 86th minute. However, down two players due to ejection, the Broncos could not mount enough of a comeback. Rocky secured the win 3-2.

Rocky’s goalkeeper, Kristofer Wennin, secured three saves with two goals allowed.

The Battlin’ Bears out-shot the Broncos 18-9 and managed 13 shots on goal.
