Sean Benson takes 7-shot lead into final round of Frontier Conference championships

PHOENIX – Montana Tech senior Sean Benson fired a 2-under-par 70 Tuesday to increase his lead to seven shots heading into Wednesday’s final round at the Frontier Conference men’s golf championships at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix.

Benson made three birdies and just a single bogey Tuesday, bettering his Monday score by one shot. He is still the only player to break par in the tournament.

Providence’s Jonny Cielak is second after a second straight 2-over-par 74. Cielak’s 148 total is one shot ahead of Rocky Mountain College’s Reece Nilsen, who shot 75 Tuesday. RMC’s Michael Tait and Montana State-Northern’s Devin Bray are tied for fourth at 152.

Nilsen and Tait helped Rocky take a two-shot lead over Tech in the team race. The defending champion Bears are at 609, with the Orediggers at 611. Lewis-Clark State is in third at 621 with Providence in fourth at 625.

Benson, who won the the State AA title with Billings Senior in 2014, will play in the final group Wednesday with Nilsen and Lewis-Clark State’s Carlos Davila. All groups tee off at 7:30 a.m. PDT.

The team and individual winner receive automatic berths to the NAIA men’s golf championships at Las Sendas Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz., May 21-24.
