Montana Tech embraces underdog role in matchup against Carroll

BUTTE — Tuesday the first round of the Frontier Conference women’s basketball playoffs tips off, and Montana Tech comes in as the No. 7 seed, which pins them against the No. 2 seed, Carroll College.

The Orediggers and Fightin’ Saints just played each other five days ago at Montana Tech where the Saints won 63-52. Diggers head coach Carly Sanon says that despite her squad going 0-3 this season against their rival, each game served as a learning experience. Every game the Diggers have shown improvement and have even upset teams like Rocky Mountain College and Providence this year.

A win Tuesday would pin Tech up against No. 1-seed Montana Western, which earned a bye into the semifinal round. Despite the odds that are stacked against the Diggers, Sanon believes a win would mean anything is possible for her squad.

“If you look at the Frontier Conference, we’ve talked about this kind of all year how good it is from top to bottom. And I think you get that one win, and for us we’re just so young and to get some energy going into the conference, you know, if we were to get a win, I think it would be huge going into that next game,” said Sanon. “So you never know what’s going to happen tournament time, but we’re excited and we’re ready to go.”
