BUTTE – From his time spent at Montana State-Northern and at the helm of the Kalispell Flathead High School football program the past couple years, Kyle Samson will bring in an offensive scheme that will make one of the Frontier Conference’s best offenses even better.

“Honestly, for me, it goes back to when he was a coordinator at Montana State-Northern. You know, being a defensive guy we had to prep for him, and what they did schematically, diversity of what they did offensively causes a lot of problems,” said Montana Tech head football coach Chuck Morrell. “So, certainly had a lot of respect for him from that time, and then developed a relationship with him over the last several years, and I’ve gotten to know him very well. He’s done an excellent job at Flathead, and so just knew with his energy, his leadership he’d be a great fit for Montana Tech.”

Samson will replace Pete Sterbick, who was Tech’s offensive coordinator from 2014-18. During Sterbick’s tenure, the Diggers featured one of the best offenses in the country. The past four seasons, Tech has had the Frontier Conference’s leading rusher: all-American Nolan Saraceni in 2015 and 2016 and Jed Fike in 2017 and 2018. Fike finished the 2018 season with 1,340 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.

Sterbick left Tech to take over offensive coordinator duties at Division II Colorado School of Mines.

Samson joins the Montana Tech staff after spending the past five seasons coaching high school football at Kalispell Flathead. He led a quick turnaround with the Braves, guiding the team to the Class AA state championship game this past fall, their first appearance in the title game since 2000. Blake Counts rushed for a Montana-record 2,588 yards this season.
