BUTTE — The Montana Tech Orediggers held their second scrimmage of fall camp Saturday at Naranche Field.

Head coach Chuck Morrell decided not to dress out some of the veteran players like Connor Wines, instead opting to see how the backups could perform.

“We have a pretty good idea where our ones are at, but there’s a lot of question marks at the twos. In this league, your twos are going to to have to play for you a bunch, so that was our focus (Saturday),” Morrell said.

While some starters are finalized, Morrell and staff are still deciding on the quarterback position. Four quarterbacks scrimmaged Saturday: Butte natives Danny Peoples and Tanner Kump, redshirt freshman Cole Hauptman, and senior Mick Paffhausen.

“All of the guys have been doing good, they all have their different strengths and weaknesses,” Morrell said of the quarterback battle. “Tanner Kump has been outstanding during fall camp here. Danny Peoples has had really good days, Cole Hauptman has brought some different things and physical traits.”

Morrell did not have a definite date when the battle will conclude, but he did leave off with one statement: “I wouldn’t be surprised if all those guys had an opportunity to play on Saturdays.”

The Orediggers are exactly two weeks away from their season opener at College of Idaho on Sept. 1.
