HELENA, Mont. — The Carroll College Fighting Saints men’s basketball picked up a big commitment out of California, coach Kurt Paulson announced on Thursday.

Gaven Ramirez — a 6-6 wing out of Corona, California — committed to the Saints’ 2019 recruiting class. Ramirez is a senior at Corona High.

“I choose Carroll because of the great people, the great staff and the great state of Montana,” Ramirez said.

Ramirez becomes the second member of Paulson’s 2019 class.

“We are excited that Gaven will be a Saint in Fall 2019,” Paulson said. “His combination of size and skill make him a tough guard. At 6-6 he brings length and athleticism to our team next year and his versatility on defense will be a luxury. He can guard four positions and he is a tremendous rebounder. He shoots a very high percentage from the three-point line and his height gives him an advantage on the perimeter. We want to recruit players that can shoot, pass and are unselfish and he is strong in all these areas.”

The 6-6, 190-pound Ramirez is averaging 24.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game and shooting 53 percent from the field, while making 43 percent of his three pointers. Those marks are way up from his junior campaign where he averaged 15.2 points and 5.4 rebounds.

“Gaven can do many things on the floor and his knack for scoring will be a major plus for us,” Paulson said. “Pair these attributes with his 3.5 GPA and his work ethic and we know he will be a fine player at Carroll. When we started recruiting him in July as we got to know him we knew that he was a Carroll guy based on his character and toughness and when he visited us in December it solidified our confidence in him.”

The Saints previously signed Idaho prep standout Jonny Hillman.
