DILLON — Fourth-ranked Montana Western didn’t make a field goal for the final five minutes but held off No. 8 Carroll College in a Frontier Conference battle on Saturday.

Carroll scored the game’s first basket, but it was the only time the Fighting Saints would lead. Western’s lead grew as big as 11 in the second quarter, but the Saints cut the deficit to 30-26 by halftime.

Western turned up its defense in the second half to fend off the Saints, holding Carroll to 9-of-26 shooting in the final two quarters. The Saints shot just 38.8 percent from the floor.

Brianna King, the Frontier Conference’s leading scorer, was held to just 12 points, but teammate Britt Cooper had a game-high 17 to lead the Bulldogs. Hannah Dean led Carroll with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

This marks the first conference loss of the season for Carroll, as it falls to 13-4 overall and 5-1 in Frontier Conference play. Western improves to 14-1 (5-1) and sit atop the Frontier Conference.
