GREAT FALLS – The University of Providence hosted the first day of the school’s annual Battle of the Rockies wrestling duals on Friday. Fourteen teams were in attendance, including 10 for men’s wrestling.

The No. 4 University of Providence Wrestling team, led by coach Caleb Schaeffer, got off to a hot start with a 42-9 team victory over No. 13 Northwest Kansas Technical College. Next, the team went up against powerhouse No. 4 McKendree University, and the Bearcats came away with a narrow 19-16 win. Finally, the Argos faced No. 20 Dickinson State and found overall victory once more with a 37-13 win.

The No. 3 MSU-Northern wrestling team, led by coach Tyson Thivierge, also faced Northwest Kansas Technical College to start the day, and the Lights dominated with a 47-4 win. But like Providence, Northern also fell to McKendree afterward in a narrow 19-12 defeat.

Day 2 of the Battle of the Rockies is on Saturday. The men’s tournament begins at 9 a.m. and the women’s tournament begins at noon.
