BUTTE — The Montana Tech Orediggers have had one glaring question throughout spring camp, and that is finding out who will replace Quinn McQueary at quarterback.

After several practices and the team’s annual spring game, the status hasn’t changed.

Butte Central alums Danny Peoples and Tanner Kump are competing with each other, as well as with California native Cole Hauptman. The three split reps on Saturday, and all had solid performances.

“The quarterbacks did well,” said senior wide receiver Dion Williams. “We always have room for improvement, but they came and showed up, stepped up and balled out.”

Regardless of performance, the patience in moving forward is by design.

“It’s something that we’re certainly not going to try and sort out (at this scrimmage), or even by the end of spring,” said head coach Chuck Morrell.

That may have been easier said than done, but the solid performances from the three candidates early in the year has certainly cemented that ideology.

“It’s a positive competition. I think all three guys have been making plays,” Morrell said. “They’ve all gotten so much better since the start of spring practices, and they’re making it a very legitimate competition.”
