DILLON — The Montana Western Bulldogs wrapped up their first week of the spring football with an hour-long scrimmage at Vigilante Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Through just five practices, head coach Ryan Nourse was pleased with the first live action.

“I thought it was a really good team scrimmage,” he said. “It was really how I kind of hoped it would materialize.”

The defense set the tone early, keeping the offense out of the end zone for the first several drives.

“It was fun, we were flying around,” said linebacker Riley Martello. “We just have to communicate a little bit better (and we have) just two more weeks to get better.”

The offense finally found the end zone on a short pass turned into a long touchdown from Kylar Prante. They then scored again on the next play from scrimmage on a long touchdown pass.

“I thought we came out and made big jumps this week,” quarterback Sean Miller said. “We (just) started this week, and kids came out and kind of did their job.”

The noticeable theme of this Bulldog squad was its athleticism, something Nourse said he hasn’t seen this much of in a while.

“I think, athletically, we’re probably at one of the best sports we’ve been since I’ve been here,” he said. “I think we’ve got big play ability on offense.”

Quarterback is the biggest position group to watch this spring, with three underclassmen vying for a vacancy that Nourse says is “completely open.” Today, he thought all of them met first-scrimmage expectations.

“The expectation for me with these guys…is — number one — you be accurate,” he explained. “You throw accurate throws, but more importantly, you make accurate decisions, and I felt like they were really wise today in the decisions that they did make.”
