Tech, Western split conference doubleheader

BUTTE — Montana Tech and Montana Western split a doubleheader on Saturday at the HPER Complex.

In the women's game, Brynley Fitzgerald poured in a game-high 26 points, Shainy Mack scored 13 and the Bulldogs blew past the Orediggers 74-52.

Western built a 27-18 halftime lead and then outscored Tech, which was playing without Tavia Rooney and Mollie Peoples, by 12 points in the third quarter.

Tech (4-9 overall, 4-9 in the Frontier Conference) was led by 13 points from Madison Allen and 9 from Dani Urick. The Orediggers converted just one 3-pointer to Western's six.

The Bulldogs (9-4, 7-4) also got 10 points from Syndey Sheridan.

In the men's game, Taylor England errupted for 27 points and Markieth Brown Jr. added 22 as the Orediggers held off the Bulldogs 77-78 for their second victory over Western in four days.

England nearly had a double-double, adding 9 rebounds. Sindou Diallo had 15 points and Derrius Collins scored 12.

Tech (8-7, 8-5) led 42-37 after after one quarter. Western took a 2-point lead seven minutes into the second half but Tech responded and led for the final 12:26.

Western (3-7, 2-7) was led by 19 points from Jamal Stephenson and 14 from Max Clark. Tanner Haverfield added 13 and Michael Haverfield had 12.

Western and Tech meet again on Sunday with the women's game tipping off at 2 p.m. and the men at 4 p.m.
