Montana Western women bow out of national tournament

LEWISTON, Idaho — There will be a new NAIA women's basketball champion this season.

A day after posting a runaway win in its national tournament opening-round game, Montana Western bowed out in the second round, falling 97-62 to fourth-seeded Westmont (Calif.) on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors now head to the final site in Sioux City, Iowa, where the rest of the tournament will be held beginning with the Round of 16.

Western finishes the season at 17-10 overall.

Mesa King led the Bulldogs with 16 points, Brynley Fitzgerald had 14, Shainy Mack scored 13 and Lilly Gopher had 10.

Westmont grabbed a 25-17 first-quarter lead and headed into halftime up 51-33.
