INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Wayne Tinkle can add an NCAA Tournament victory to his head coaching resume.
The 12th-seeded Oregon State Beavers continued their Cinderella postseason run with a 70-56 win over No. 5 Tennessee in the opening round in the Midwest Region.
It's Tinkle's fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament as a head coach and second with Oregon State. He last saw a win in the tournament as an assistant coach with Montana in 2006 when the then-No. 12 Grizzlies beat No. 5 Nevada.
Tinkle helped the Beavers snap a long drought, as well. Oregon State had not won a game in the NCAA Tournament since 1982 when the Beavers made a run to the Elite Eight.
Oregon State senior Roman Silva had a team-high 16 points on a perfect 8-of-8 shooting. The Beavers held Tennessee to just 33.3% shooting from the floor. Oregon State never trailed and the game was only tied once, 2-2.
Oregon State will play the winner of No. 4 Oklahoma State and No. 13 Liberty on Sunday for a chance at the Sweet 16.
