LARAMIE, Wyo. - University of Wyoming junior guard Hunter Maldonado was named High Major National Player of the Week and Mountain West Player of the Week by College Sports Madness after leading the Pokes to two wins last week and improving Wyoming to 5-1 on the season.
Maldonado, a native of Colorado Springs, Colo., led the Pokes averaging 22 points per game in a home win against Denver and a road victory at Utah Valley. He also added eight rebounds per game and seven assists per contest.
He scored 30 points at Utah Valley on Saturday leading the Pokes to the win. It was tied with Marcus Williams (30 points vs. Denver) for the second most in the conference this season. That mark is the most against an NCAA Division I opponent in the MW this season. He also added eight rebounds against the Wolverines and eight assists, as he had his hand in two-thirds of the Cowboy baskets against UVU.
He added 14 points against Denver on Wednesday and led the Pokes with nine rebounds and six assists. He leads the conference and ranks No. 24 in the nation in assists. He also ranks No. 11 in the conference in scoring and ranks in the top-15 in the league in rebounding.
Wyoming returns to action on Thursday hosting Omaha in the Arena-Auditorium at 7 p.m. in a contest that will be streamed on the MW Network.
