MAYVILLE, N.D. -- The Dickinson State defense keeps getting better and better.
The Blue Hawks intercepted five passes and limited Mayville State to just 11 first downs and 257 total yards en route to a 37-7 North Star Athletic Association football win on Saturday.
Creighton Pfau, who had 257 yards and four touchdowns in Mayville State's 51-26 loss at Dickinson Start earlier in the season, was 3-of-7 passing for 24 yards and an interception before leaving with an injury on Saturday. Backup Tim Salmon found it tough sledding against DSU's defense, completing only 9 of 23 passes for 157 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions.
The Blue Hawks spread the fun around on defense, with five different players -- Paxton Miller, Jared Smith, Reece Hoherz, Justin Tauaefa and Deavon Crawford -- recording interceptions. Smith, a Glasgow native, also had a sack on Saturday.
Offensively, Dickinson State used a balanced attack that churned out 216 rushing yards and 189 passing yards. Riley Linder, a former Scobey standout, had 79 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, and Derek Tabor had 74 yards and two TDs on the ground. Braden Zuroff added a 4-yard touchdown run in the closing minutes of the game.
Tabor first found the end zone on an 8-yard run early in the first quarter. Drew Boedecker hooked up with Jaret Lee for a 4-yard passing touchdown to start the second quarter, and Tabor added his second TD -- a 30-yarder -- just before half as Dickinson State built a 21-0 lead.
Mayville State's lone score came in the third quarter, when Maalik Flowers broke free for an 82-yard scoring pass from Salmon. The Blue Hawks added Linder's and Zuroff's touchdowns and a 32-yard field goal from Jeremiah Paine, who played high school football for the Westby-Grenora co-op, in the fourth quarter to salt the game away.
Boedecker finished the game completing 12 of 23 passes for 148 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Lee had five catches for 43 yards and the score, while Billings Senior product Tyger Frye had 53 yards on three catches. Conor McCarvel, from Helena Capital, had three catches for 14 yards.
Dickinson State (6-0) is back home next Saturday to face Waldorf (4-2). Kickoff is at 1 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Biesiot Activities Center.
