GREAT FALLS -- Great Falls Central bounced back from its first loss of the 2019 football season, a 46-35 setback at Fort Benton last week, with a 60-20 win over visiting Rocky Boy on Saturday afternoon in Great Falls.
The game wasn't as close as the 40-point margin indicates, either. Great Falls Central jumped out to a 38-0 lead by the end of the first quarter behind four total touchdowns from Shane Girres and a fumble return by Cayle Schraner. Girres had scoring runs of 35, 10 and 45 yards and threw a 2-yard touchdown to Nick Scott.
Girres added a 27-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and the Mustangs carried a 44-0 lead into halftime.
Great Falls Central's Drew Newman took the opening kick of the third quarter back 78 yards for a touchdown to push the lead to 52-0. The Mustangs took their foot off the gas on the way to the 60-20 win.
Girres finished with 117 yards and four touchdowns on just four carries. He also had 37 yards passing and one touchdown on just six attempts.
The Mustangs held Rocky Boy to 184 total yards and an average of 3.7 yards per play. Rocky Boy was also 0 for 10 on third downs and lost four fumbles.
Great Falls Central improves to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the 8-Man North 'A' sub-conference. The Mustangs will host Chester-Joplin-Inverness on Oct. 12. Rocky Boy falls to 0-5 (0-4) and will visit Cascade on Oct. 11.
