Class B football roundup: Manhattan controls Townsend, improves to 7-0

MANHATTAN -- Kyle Hotvedt said the Manhattan football team needed to treat Friday night's Southern B showdown with Townsend just like any other game.

Hotvedt, though, played it like a big game, dominated the visiting Bulldogs in the first half to help his Tigers to a 34-14 win and improve to 7-0 overall on the season. The senior caught two touchdown passes on offense and intercepted a pass on defense as Manhattan built a 21-0 lead that Townsend wouldn't be able to overcome.

Lane Veltkamp hit Hotvedt for both TDs -- from 35 and 55 yards -- before Garrit Weeda punched in another touchdown to make it 21-0 before Townsend got anything going. The Bulldogs did add a Trey Hoveland-to-Zach Idland touchdown to get within 21-6 at halftime.

Townsend started the second half scoring on its opening possession to get to 21-14, but Weeda pushed the lead back to 27-14 early in the fourth. Veltkamp threw his third touchdown pass of the game to provide the final margin of 34-14.

Manhattan improves to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the Southern B with the win. The Tigers will look to continue their undefeated season and secure the South's No. 1 seed next week at Jefferson (5-2 overall, 4-1 conference) on Oct. 25.

Townsend falls to 5-2 overall and 4-1 conference and will host Columbus (4-3, 3-2) next week.
