HAVRE -- Jack Waddell scored three first-half touchdowns to help Laurel kick off its Eastern A football season with a 42-0 win over Havre at Blue Pony Stadium on Friday.

Waddell got it going early for the Locomotives, who were playing their first game since last year's loss in the Class A state championship. Waddell first scored on a long pass from Eli Aby and then returned a punt 55 yards for his second touchdown of the game to give Laurel a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.

He added another score in the second quarter on a double pass, and Emmett Renner and Dalton Boehler also found the end zone for the Locomotives. Boehler recovered a bad snap by the Blue Ponies and returned it for a touchdown to help the Locos build a 35-0 halftime lead.

Colter Bales added Laurel's sixth touchdown in the third quarter, and the Locomotives iced it from there to start the season 1-0. Havre is 0-1. Both teams were playing their first games of the season after the Eastern A elected to cancel its non-conference games because of the coronavirus pandemic.
