BELT -- It was close for a while, but Fort Benton ultimately flexed its muscles for a 50-24 8-Man football win over Belt at Remington Field on Friday.
The Longhorns and Huskies both entered the game 3-0 (2-0 8-Man North) aiming to take control of the North's 'A' sub-conference, and the game looked like it was going to shape up to be a slugfest in the early going. The Longhorns found the end zone first, taking a 6-0 lead when Hayden Diekhans connected with Andrew Ballantyne for a 15-yard touchdown pass.
Fort Benton attempted an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, but Belt recovered and took advantage. The Huskies marched down the field for their first touchdown of the game, a Kaimen Evans run, to take an 8-6 lead. Fort Benton added its second touchdown in the second to take a 14-8 lead into halftime and then seized control in the third quarter.
By the time the third period ended, the Longhorns held a 36-16 lead, and they poured it on in the fourth, adding touchdowns from Hayden Axtman and Morgan Axtman to push the lead to 50-16. A late Belt touchdown resulted in the final 50-24 score.
Fort Benton improved to 4-0 on the season, with a 3-0 mark in the 8-Man North 'A' sub-conference. Belt felt to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the North 'A'.
