FORT BENTON -- Jace Thompson scored on the first play from scrimmage and Fort Benton never looked back in a 46-35 win over 8-Man North rival Great Falls Central on Friday night.
Thompson took advantage of a Mustangs' fumble on the first snap of the game, giving the Longhorns a quick 8-0 lead, then Garrett and Hayden Diekhans connected on a long touchdown pass minutes later to push the lead to two scores. Fort Benton's defense, which hadn't allowed more than two touchdowns in a game until Friday, scored again when Garrett Diekhans scored on a fumble return of his own.
Fort Benton built a 32-0 lead after the opening quarter.
Central, though, wouldn't go quietly, with Shane Girres finding Trevor Thompson for the Mustangs' first points of the game in the second quarter. But despite the rally, the Mustangs couldn't overcome the slow start as Fort Benton improved to 5-0, while Great Falls Central fell to 4-1.
Fort Benton will put its unbeaten season on the line next Friday at Simms, while Great Falls Central welcomes Rocky Boy next Saturday.
