SUNBURST -- Kade Strutz had a hand in six touchdowns to help Big Sandy maintain control of the 6-Man North with a 74-34 win over Sunburst on Friday.
Strutz ran for two touchdowns and passed for another in the first quarter as the Pioneers built a quick 18-0 lead over Sunburst, but the Refiners didn't go away quietly.
They responded in the second quarter with 19 points on three touchdown passes from Cade Hanson, one to Cole Johnson and two to Stanley Jarvis.
"We started off pretty slow in the second quarter, coaches got on to us and we stepped it up and came out swinging," Strutz said after the game. "I think we got complacent with our lead and thought we didn't have to try as hard anymore and gave up a couple big plays and came back and bid us hard."
Kody Strutz hooked up with Lance Rutledge for a Big Sandy TD in the quarter, and the Pioneers took a 26-19 lead into halftime.
They took control in the third, though, exploding for 40 points in the period. Parker Proulx opened the second-half scoring with a 55-yard run, and then Kade Strutz added a short TD moments later. Kody Strutz was on the receiving end of a touchdown this time, catching a 16-yarder from Proulx. Kade Strutz and Proulx eached added scoring runs later in the quarter, as Big Sandy put the game out of reach despite two touchdowns from Jarvis, one on a kickoff return and the other on a 33-yard pass from Hanson.
Kade Strutz finished with 237 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, while Proulx added 132 yards and three more scores. Kody Strutz (5-of-8 passing, 127 yards), Kade Strutz (4-of-6, 36) and Proulx (2-of-2, 29) each had one passing TD in the game, with Proulx, Rutledge and Kody Strutz on the receiving end.
Jarvis had a big game for Sunburst, finishing with 12 receptions for 180 yards and three TDs. He had another 194 yards and a touchdown on kick returns.
Big Sandy is now 4-0 in the 6-Man North, while Sunburst is 2-2.
