MISSOULA — The Montana State volleyball team completed its two-game season sweep of the Montana Grizzlies on Monday evening with a 3-0 win at Dahlberg Arena.
The sweep secured the inaugural Main Line Trophy for the Bobcats which was revealed before the two teams met. MSU won the opening game 3-2 on Sunday in Missoula.
Kira Thomsen finished with 20 kills for the Bobcats (4-2, 4-2 Big Sky Conference) while Hannah Scott added 11. Delaney Shearan finished with 17 assists and three aces while Allie Lynch added 15 assists. Emma Pence added eight assisted blocks while Jourdain Klein finished with five, and Alexis Goroski led MSU with 16 digs.
Amethyst Harper led Montana (1-7, 1-7) with eight kills while Sophia Meyers finished with seven. Carly Anderson had 19 assists for the Griz while Sarah Ashley led UM with 11 digs.
Montana State started the first set out 9-0 with Shearan serving, but trailing 13-4, Montana rallied with an 8-0 run of its own with Ashley serving to get within one point. Montana never gained the lead, and a kill from Thomsen sealed the first set for the Bobcats.
MSU jumped out fast again in the second set to grab a 9-3 lead, and never looked back as Thomsen continued to dominate. One more kill from her made it 2-0 Bobcats headed into the third set.
Montana started the third off with an 11-7 lead, but Montana State responded with an 8-1 run to take the lead for good. Klein earned the game-winning kill to seal the game, the series and the trophy for the Bobcats.
Montana State hosts Idaho State next weekend, while Montana hits the road to take on Eastern Washington.
