Meet the Midland Roundtable Athlete of the Year finalists

BILLINGS — The Midland Roundtable will crown its 2018 boys and girls athletes of the year at their banquet on Wednesday. The award is annually given to graduating seniors from one the four Billings schools — Senior, Skyview, West and Central.

The Midland Roundtable announced the 2018 finalists on May 2. Billings Senior boasts six of the 10 nominees: Nolan Askelson, Charlie Klepps, Gabe Sulser, Courtney Bad Bear, Payton Meyer and Raegan Steiner. Billings West had three nominees — Joey Moore, Maddie Brockel and Catherine Follett — while Brock Bushfield is Billings Skyview’s lone representatives. Billings Central did not have a nominee.

Braydon Deming of Billings West and Brittanee Fisher of Billings Senior won the 2017 awards.

BOYS

Nolan Askelson, Billings Senior — Askelson was named the 2017 Class AA defensive football MVP and was twice a first-team all-state linebacker.

Brock Bushfield, Billings Skyview — Bushfield won two State AA wrestling championships while also earning all-state recognition on the football field.

Charlie Klepps, Billings Senior — Klepps won the 132-pound wrestling championship in February to become the 32nd four-time champion in Montana history.

Joey Moore, Billings West — A four-time all-state golfer, Moore won the past two State AA golf championships.

Gabe Sulser, Billings Senior — A three-time all-state football player, Sulser was named the 2017 Montana Gatorade player of the year.

GIRLS

Courtney Bad Bear, Billings Senior — Bad Bear earned all-state recognition in volleyball as well as academic all-state honors in both volleyball and basketball.

Maddie Brockel, Billings West — Brockel has won six individual track and field championships, including the past three 200-meter dash titles.

Catherine Follett, Billings West — Follett, a second-team all-state volleyball player, earned academic all-state honors her sophomore, junior and senior seasons.

Payton Meyer, Billings Senior — Meyer played four years of varsity softball at Senior, earning all-state honors as a junior.

Raegan Steiner, Billings Senior — The 2017 Montana Gatorade volleyball player of the year, Steiner also earned all-American honors at Senior.
