Martin Wilkie, Tilynne Vasquez win Flo Reno World championships

RENO, Nev. — Montana added a pair of Flo Reno Worlds champions on Sunday evening, as Havre High’s Martin Wilkie and Kalispell Flathead’s Tilynne Vasquez captured titles at the prestigious event.

Wilkie, Class A’s 145-pound champion this winter, earned a first period pin in the first period of his match on Sunday. The latest Blue Pony standout, a three-time Montana champion, Wilkie pinned Washington’s Tanner Craig at the 1:21 mark of the 132-pound championship match.

Vasquez captured fourth-place honors in the Class AA 103-pound bracket in February and added to her trophy case with a win in the 108-pound championship Sunday. Vasquez, who earned gold at the Pan-Am Championships last summer, defeated Aubrey Navarro in the title match on Sunday.

Helena Wrestling Club’s Taylor Lay picked up a 6-1 decision in the 65-pound championship match, adding a third title for the Treasure State. Lay defeated West Virginia’s Talea Guntrum in the first-place match. Bozeman’s Ryder Crawford will also return to the Treasure State a champion, using a 4-2 decision in the 67-pound finale to capture his title.

Hardin’s Bruno Pallone won a title at 100 pounds, riding an 11-2 decision over Oregon’s Gunnar Tamez to the top spot on the podium.

Wilkie’s Havre High teammate Cameron Pleninger finished in fifth place at 113-pounds, months after a fourth-place finish in the State A brackets. The Blue Ponies also saw Marc Ramirez finish fifth at 115 pounds.

Great Falls CMR state champion Kai Stewart also placed fifth Sunday. Stewart competed at 138 pounds.

Missoula Big Sky’s Dougie Swanson and Helena High’s Devin Crawford competed in the 145-pound bracket, with Swanson placing fourth and Crawford sixth. Swanson fell to California’s Jacob Hansen 6-0, while Crawford dropped a 6-5 decision to Oregon’s Nick Peterson.

Other Treasure State finishes included a sixth-place effort from Ennis’ Nolan Brown in a 64-pound bracket, while Belgrade’s Colton Gutenberger placed fifth at 73 pounds. Mason Gutenberger also tallied a fifth-place effort, his at 84 pounds, while Carter Schmidt, also of Belgrade, placed third in the 80-pound bracket.

Conrad’s McKenna Jones placed fourth at 85 pounds, while Florence’s Hunter Meinzen defeated Havre’s Conner Harris 4-1 at 145 pounds. Ennis’ Brummie Boggus captured fifth-place honors competing at 70 pounds, and Montana City’s Connor Lamping wrestled at 73 pounds and placed sixth.

Billings’ William Alves secured the fifth-place spot on the podium after wrestling at 49 pounds. Alves won the final match 9-0. Hardin’s Cale Nedens was fourth at 61 pounds and Ennis’ Brandon Foss sixth at 64 pounds.
