As the 2016-17 school year wraps up, Missoula Loyola probably wishes they had claimed a few more championships for the trophy case. But several near misses for the Rams and Breakers showed the school’s depth, and made Loyola the Class B montanasports.com all-sports champions.

We added up results from every MHSA sanctioned sport during the school year; giving 10 points for a state title, seven points to the runners-up, six points to third place, down to one point to the team that finished in eighth place at state.

After adding up the results, Missoula Loyola totaled 42.5 points by placing in nine different sports. The Rams boys golf team won a state title. But after that the Rams piled up points thanks to second place in football and boys tennis, third place in girls golf, and many other teams fighting their way into the top 8.

In contrast, Loyola’s closest competition won more state titles, but placed in fewer sports. Second place Townsend won boys cross country and girls tennis championships. Third-place Fairfield claimed girls basketball and boys track and field championships. But the Bulldogs and Eagles each only placed in five sports.

Bigfork climbed up to fourth place thanks to a girls track and field championship on the final day of competition for the year. Manhattan rounded out the top five. The Tigers won girls cross country back in October, and finished only half a point behind the Vals and Vikings.
